Named for philanthropists Ruth and James Ottaway, the award celebrates individuals whose advocacy and support have made a lasting impact on the Hudson Valley. A lifelong resident, RJ has spent more than 50 years shaping the area’s real estate landscape as founder and president of Richard J. Smith Enterprises Corp., generating over $1 billion in sales, preserving thousands of acres of farmland and open space, and driving major economic growth. His professional work spans brokerage, construction, development, and consulting, making him a trusted advisor to both public and private sectors.

Equally distinguished is RJ’s extensive record of civic engagement, including leadership roles with the Community Foundation of Orange & Sullivan, Storm King Art Center, the Orange County Arts Council, and Vision Hudson Valley. He has served in public office, supported youth development, advanced local arts and business, and contributed to historic preservation and environmental stewardship across numerous organizations. Recognized with multiple community awards, RJ’s dedication to public service, culture, and regional improvement embodies the spirit of the Ottaway Medal. He will be honored at the Ottaway Medal Dinner on Thursday, May 7, 2026, at Villa Venezia in Middletown, NY.
